Competition

Welcome to Made In Egypt (MIE) competition for undergraduates.

Motive…Idea…Out-come

Each year hundreds of graduation projects are implemented by engineering and computer
science students as a requirement to complete their bachelor degree. A huge portion
of these projects are never further utilized for any other purpose but to proof
some theoretical concepts proposed by students or universities. On the other hand
the industrial sector suffers almost continuously from the lack of graduating students’
exposure to the market requirements, and skills needed for products’ development
within the industrial arena.

MIE is a competition for students in their senior graduating year from engineering
and computer science schools from all Egyptian universities. The competition aims
at developing the outcome of students’ graduation projects by exposing the students
to the needs of the market and giving them a chance to develop prototypes for such
needs aroused by industrial partners.

MIE has been introduced to the Egyptian market in 2006, back then the initial motivation
behind the program was to introduce and spread the concepts of IUL to the Egyptian
students, and spreading awareness amongst the industrial sector. Now with this target
accomplished, MIE is now taking a leap to the next step which is to ensure the outcome
of the participating projects.

In the 8th round of MIE for the academic year 2012-2013, the requirements of the
competition this year have changed dramatically; targeting (quality rather than
quantity). The competition capacity of teams will be minimized a lot comparing with
the previous years (For more info, please refer to the History and
statistics section
) and there will be punctual selection process for teams,
projects’ ideas and sponsorships, as our focus is on the actual technical mentor-ship
and high quality prototypes that will be real seeds for commercial and industrial
products after competition.

The expected outcome of MIE competition
is to produce:

  • A functional prototype to be a base for a product
that fulfills one of the following:

    • Develop new technological prototypes or services with
      significant market value.
    • Substitute a similar imported product.
    • Fulfilling sponsor needs in general where applicable.
  • A Team equipped with:
    • MIE’s vision in developing Egypt through innovative
      ideas, and products.
    • Communications skills to build and maintain a productive
relationship with the team and within external entities.
    • Technical skills to develop a functional prototype.
    • Knowledge to solve problems, develop projects, and
seize opportunities whenever they might be found.
    • Entrepreneurial skills.

be processed if the video is not submitted before the deadline.)

After the successful submission of this information online, an email will be sent
to all the team members containing login info for your team’s MIE account.

Phase-2: Initial Selection and Filtration
(1st Filtration point)

The sooner you complete all admission requirements
( Project info, video ,HR Form…etc), the better. We will accept limited number
of teams this year, so we may close the registration if we find Once we find our
right candidates our target number of qualified teams who have completed all the
admission requirements . And then , we will not accept any more teams.

  • The filtration and selection criteria:

    • Project Abstract (if any)
    • Team HR Application
    • Team Video
  • If any part in 2 required items is missing, your application
    will be rejected.

After becoming one of the teams accepted to get through to this phase, you will
pass by the following:

Team Coordination
  • The direct support MIE is providing to the accepted
teams is represented in the Teams Coordinator.
  • Each accepted team will be assigned a Team Coordinator.
What is the Team Coordinator?
  • Is a member of the MIE organizing committee who has
extensive knowledge and experience in managing similar projects that will help you
get through the competition phases successfully.
  • Is the team’s interface with MIE. He/she will follow
up on the team’s progress, provide support and guidance through the different phases
of the competition, and make sure that required assistance is allocated
  • Will act as Project management consultant for the team,
develop plan and set goals for project with the team, and ensure that the team is
moving in the right direction with a good pace.
  • Establishing and maintaining communication links between
all parties involved in the project development; the team, the university, the sponsor,
    and MIE committee.
  • Making sure that the progress of the project is going
according to the plan set for the prototype development.

Phase -3: Induction Training and Workshop

Training
  • Trainings will be provided to the teams that pass the
    initial filtration phase.
  • Trainings topics will be set in coordination with the
sponsor companies to ensure the delivery of an integrated package to the participating
    teams.
  • Trainings will include basic business and interpersonal
skills required for the completion of the project successfully.
  • The exact dates will be announced later on.

Phase – 4: Project & Sponsors submission (2nd Filtration
point)

Our focus is to find the best teams with the actual technical mentor-ship which
have the ability to deliver high quality prototypes, and our target is to find projects
with quality rather than admitting a large number of teams.

  •  Each team shall submit:
    • Project Proposal.
    • Product Design & Development Report.
    • Industry University Link application. This shows the details of the deal with the
      sponsor.
  • The exact dates and details of this phase will be announced
    later on.

Phase – 5: Inspection point and MIE Finals/ EED

Inspection point
  • A quality check on your prototype, in which we inspect your final prototype is finished and perform the target functionalities as described in the technical/business reports you have provided to MIE before you enter MIE Finals.

Inspection point
  • Only the best teams who pass all the filtration and checkpoints reach MIE Finals.
  • MIE Finals takes place in Day-0 in Egyptian Engineering Day (EED).
  • Each team of the finalists do a presentation in front of the judgment panel that includes number of technical and business judges who evaluate both your project’s technical quality and business value on site.
  • The winners are announced in the EED closing ceremony.

Note 1 : if your team reached MIE finals, you will have to register in and pay EED fees which is separate from MIE Fees. If the team has an issue with paying this fee, feel free to contact MIE on [email protected].

How will MIE committee select accepted teams?

Selection of the teams will be based on some factors, the most prominent are:

  • Partnering with a sponsor who will provide valuable technical support to the team.
  • The idea generated and how it is related to the market.
  • The competencies of the team in terms of technicality, diverse expertise, communicational,
    and interpersonal skills
  • Having a clear roadmap and timeline for development and implementation.

Note 1 : The team should have a technical
sponsor in order to be considered a participating team (managerial and financial
sponsors are considered secondary sponsors). For more details about different
between these type of sponsors , please refer to “Getting sponsored” section below
.

Note 2 : This year, getting sponsor is not
required from start of MIE, rather it is required starting from this phase.

Competition Regulation

  • MIE deals with the team as one entity not as individuals.
  • The team has to be a group of students (2 or more)
from the same university with a graduation project registered in their university.
  • Supervisor of your project in university must be aware
and agrees on your participation in MIE competition.
  • Each Team is allowed to register with only one project
(one idea). It has to be registered as a graduation project (i.e. team can’t just
register with any idea that is not their actual graduation project).
  • A team member should exist only in one team group (i.e.
same person cannot be a member in more than one team).
  • It is not required to have a sponsor to start the registration;
this could be done in a further step. However a team should have an idea and a sponsor
to pass the 2nd filtration point.
  • If students from different universities or different
departments want to do joint projects and register with them in MIE competition,
they have to contact the MIE committee 1st.
  • If a team decides to break up into two teams or if
two teams decide to join forces and merge becoming one single team, the MIE committee
will solely have the right to accept or reject the action.
  • Any data submitted as a part of the registration process
about the project, team members, university supervisor, the sponsor company, and
the IUL agreement must be correct. If it came to the attention of the MIE committee
that any of the above stated data is incorrect, the team will be dropped out of
    the competition.

Companies that would be interested sponsor you would because of one or more of the
following reasons:

  • Company needs your product, or finds potential market value for the project to have
    a market value.

but it will sponsor your team as form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or
    for marketing purposes.

In all cases, the support that you will get from your sponsor will be in the form
of:

  • Technical support: in which the company may assigns someone to
guide you technically through the project phases , give you technical training internally
    , …etc
  • Financial support: in which the company will support your financial
needs either by money , providing you with components and the equipments you will
need to finish the prototype , pay for technical courses that you might need in
    project…etc
  • Managerial support: The Company might help you in the management
part of the project; providing you with guidance and support on how to select good
markets to penetrate, what to look for when designing your prototype, guide you
to use a professional development process … etc.

The team should have a technical sponsor in order to be considered a participating
team in MIE (managerial and financial sponsors are considered secondary sponsors).

More information about this will be provided to the accepted teams (teams who pass
1st Filtration point “Phase-2: Initial Selection and Filtration”).
